Yorktown to celebrate National Farmers Market Week with special market on Aug. 10

YORKTOWN – Yorktown will celebrate National Farmers Market Week with a special market at Riverwalk Landing on Saturday, August 10, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The event recognizes the impact farmers markets have on the community by preserving farmland through economic viability and encouraging engagement between neighbors.
Products that come from these farms are harvested at the peak of freshness and go through only two hands – the farmer and the customer – before reaching the plate.
For comparison, fruits and vegetables sold at the supermarket are picked seven to 14 days before they become available for purchase and travel an average of 1,200 miles before they reach store shelves, according to the National Market Coalition.
The National Farmers Market Week Wrap-Up will feature more than 50 local vendors. Families will be able to play lawn games and pick up free temporary tattoos and coloring sheets for kids. Guests will also have the opportunity to plant seeds in biodegradable starter pods, courtesy of Yorktown Feed Seed N’ More.

Local musician Ritchie Beard will provide live entertainment from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the Riverwalk Landing Stage, and the Fifes and Drums of Yorktown will perform at 10 a.m.
The free, accessible Yorktown Trolley will be in operation beginning at 10 a.m. during the event.
Yorktown Market Days is held rain or shine. The vendors and artists will move to the lower level of the parking terrace in the case of inclement weather.
