Shoppers facing food insecurity in Greater Williamsburg can now take advantage of a new grocery option.

Local nonprofit Grove Christian Outreach Center (GCOC) officially launched the area’s first free grocery store on Wednesday.

Called The Gathering Place, the goal is to provide a welcoming space where families can shop for food in a supportive, dignified environment.

  • The store features a wide selection of nutritious food options, including fresh produce, deli products, grains, meats, canned foods and frozen items.

Shoppers have the opportunity to browse and select food items based on their household’s dietary needs and preferences. Volunteers are partnered with families to help ensure a smooth experience.

Katie Patrick, executive director of Grove Christian Outreach Center, said the approximately 2,000-square-foot Gathering Place is designed to alleviate the stigma often associated with receiving food assistance, making it a welcome resource for families navigating challenging times.

  • “We are overjoyed to officially open The Gathering Place and invite families to experience a grocery market designed to meet their needs with dignity and care,” said Patrick during a ribbon cutting at the market. “This is more than a food resource. It’s a place of hope, connection and community.”

Community support: The new grocery option is made possible by the generosity of local donors, businesses and community partners, according to Patrick. Key local supporters include regional grocery retailer Food Lion and The Williamsburg Health Foundation.

  • “We would not be opening The Gathering Place without the support of the community, whether that’s from our volunteers who show up in many different ways, whether that’s from the Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce or the elected officials who support and are so grateful for the work that we do for residents,” Patrick. “The greater Williamsburg community has really stepped up in remarkable ways to make this dream a reality.”

Who can shop: The Gathering Place is open to residents of James City County and Williamsburg. Shoppers must provide proof of residency. Residents of York County, Newport News or Hampton can shop by appointment at The Market at THRIVE, a free grocery store recently founded by Thrive Peninsula.

How to help: According to Office Manager Linda McKeoun, financial donations “are always appreciated” to ensure the store can continue serving the community. While GCOC receives food donations from numerous local grocery stores, the organization also buys food directly to ensure the availability of a range of items. Volunteers are also needed to help with an upcoming Thanksgiving Market, Christmas Market and ongoing operations.

More information: Located at 8800 Pocahontas Trail, GCOC is now in its 20th year. The organization served 575 local families with 8,530 pantry visits in 2023. For additional details, including hours of operation, visit groveoutreach.com.
