Williamsburg Rite Aid permanently closes, other locations to shut doors in coming days

The Rite Aid located at 5601B Richmond Rd. – in the Williamsburg Premium Outlets plaza – has permanently closed its doors. Its last day of operation was Wednesday, Jan. 10. A staff member at the location told The Triangle that all pharmacy customers at the store will automatically have their prescriptions transferred to the Lightfoot Harris Teeter on Thursday, Jan. 11. 

Additional closures: Sixteen other locations in Hampton Roads have already closed or will be closing soon, the Daily Press reports. Five are located on the Peninsula, including:

  • 4501 News Rd. in Williamsburg
  • 14260 Warwick Blvd. in Newport News (closed on Wednesday) 
  • 671 J. Clyde Morris Blvd. in Newport News 
  • 2460 George Washington Memorial Highway in Hayes
  • 4813 W. Mercury Blvd. in Hampton

Rite Aid Corporation has been facing financial problems for months, due in part to lawsuits connected to the nation’s opioid crisis. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October and is now in the process of closing underperforming stores throughout the nation.
