What is The Triangle?
The Triangle is an independent community news outlet covering Virginia’s Historic Triangle – Williamsburg, James City County and York County – as well as the surrounding region.
The organization was founded in 2021 by local journalist Christin Nielsen to help address the decline in local news in our community.
The Triangle offers:
- Weekly coverage of local events
- Bullet-point-style news updates to quickly bring readers up-to-date on important local issues
- In-depth feature and investigative reporting on topics that impact our community
- Civic news and election coverage
- Profiles on local people and businesses
The Triangle is a politically neutral publication grounded in the ethics standards guided by the Society of Professional Journalists. Our small newsroom is supported by the community through donations, grant funding and local advertisements.
Mission Statement
The Triangle’s mission is to inform the civic dialogue, promote community engagement and elevate underrepresented voices. Our focus is on providing relevant, high-quality news and information that is fully accessible to everyone. We pledge to offer nonpartisan, unbiased coverage of topics that matter to the residents of our region. In all that we do, earning the trust and respect of our audience is paramount. We are a locally owned and operated publication that puts our community first.
Corrections Policy
We correct all errors that are brought to our attention and note on the story the date and details of the update. If you see an error, let us know at christin@thetriangle.news.
Commentary and Opinion Policy
Our focus is on news and information. We accept a limited number of commentary submissions from local residents with the goal of highlighting diverse voices in our community and encouraging healthy civic discussion. All opinion pieces are clearly labeled and do not reflect the views of The Triangle or its editorial staff.
Editorial Independence and Donations Policy
We subscribe to the standards of editorial independence adopted by the Institute for Nonprofit News:
Our organization retains full authority over editorial content to protect the best journalistic and business interests of our organization. We maintain a firewall between news coverage decisions and sources of all revenue. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors or their products, services or opinions.
We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals and organizations for the general support of our activities, but our news judgments are made independently and not on the basis of donor support.
Our organization may consider donations to support the coverage of particular topics, but our organization maintains editorial control of the coverage. We will cede no right of review or influence of editorial content, nor of unauthorized distribution of editorial content.
Our organization will make public all donors who give a total of $5,000 or more per year. We will accept anonymous donations for general support only if it is clear that sufficient safeguards have been put into place that the expenditure of that donation is made independently by our organization and in compliance with INN’s Membership Standards.
