James City County sidewalk, bikeway project nearly complete
A major sidewalk and bikeway improvement initiative is nearly complete in the Norge area of James City County.
The $1.6 million project will improve bikeway and pedestrian access along a section of Richmond Road between Croaker and Old Church roads, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
- Wider, ADA compliant sidewalks were installed on the north side of Richmond Road from the intersection of Croaker Road to Norge Lane as well as on the south side of Richmond Road, from the intersection of Croaker Road to Norge Lane to Old Church Road.
- A new roadway bike lane was constructed on the north side of Richmond Road, spanning from the intersection of Croaker Road to Norge Crossing Shopping Center.
- A pedestrian crosswalk with an upgraded traffic signal was installed at the intersection of Richmond Road and Norge Lane to accommodate pedestrians crossing on Richmond Road.
The project will be fully completed in the next few months. It was awarded by VDOT to the Williamsburg-based J.S.G Corporation in late 2022, with construction starting in July 2023.
- Crews are planning to finish landscaping work along the shoulders and throughout project limits this fall.
