The beloved Christmas poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” (or “A Visit from St. Nicholas”) was published in 1823, but connects to Christmas literature and traditions from the Colonial period. To celebrate America’s upcoming 250th anniversary in 2026, join William & Mary Libraries in partnership with the WRL Gallery at Stryker Center to learn more about colonial Christmas! “Twas the Night Before Christmas” is one of the most popular Christmas poems now, but it built upon traditions of published songs and poetry written by early Americans. This winter, learn about 18th and 19th-century Christmas traditions, including decorations, cooking, clothing, songs, and Santa Claus! Free & open to the public.
