AWCON Qualifier: Falcons Coach Optimistic Of Victory Against Gambia
Thomas Dennerby, Super Falcons Coach, says he is optimistic of victory against Gambia in the Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifier next month.
Dennerby told the News Agency of Nigeria after the team’s morning training session on Tuesday that his experience as a coach would enable the team to secure a ticket for the tournament.
NAN reports that the Gambians will host the first leg of the qualifiers in Banjul on June 5 and the home fixture will be held in Nigeria on June 11.
Recalling the 8-0 thrashing of the team by their French-speaking counterparts in Paris in a friendly last month, the Swede said he was unperturbed about their previous performance.
He said: “As an experienced coach, I have been into success and into teams that fail. That is normal because when you are experienced, you know how to handle feeling around games.
“The game with France is in the past now. My expectation is to qualify for AWCON and I am confident.”
Dennerby, who invited 25 home-based players and a foreign-based for the first phase of camping which began May 10, said the Nigeria Women Football League possess quality players.
He said: “There is a difference though between the Swedish league and that of Nigeria.
“I have watched a few of the matches played in the league and I can say that the NWPL has quality players.”
The winner of the fixtures will take part in the tournament in Ghana in November. The Falcons have won the title eight times since its inception in 1998.
